Torrent Group to Acquire Majority Stake in Gujarat Titans
The Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group has reportedly reached an agreement to acquire a majority stake in the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Gujarat Titans. The deal involves Torrent acquiring a majority stake from private equity major CVC Capital Partners, who will retain a minority stake.
The report in The Economic Times suggests that Torrent and CVC have a "gentleman's agreement" in place, with a formal deal expected to be signed after a lock-in period ends. The valuation of Gujarat Titans is estimated to be over $1 billion.
Torrent's entry into the IPL comes after both Adani Group and Torrent had unsuccessfully bid for the Ahmedabad franchise in 2021. Adani Group reportedly stepped back from the current deal to focus on its core businesses, including power and ports.
CVC Capital Partners is already a significant player in the sports ecosystem, with investments in LaLiga, Premiership Rugby, and Volleyball World. They had acquired Gujarat Titans for Rs 5,625 crore in 2021.
Both Adani and Torrent have separate arms for investments in sports. Adani Sportsline owns teams in the Women's Premier League, kabaddi, kho-kho, and International League T20, while Torrent Sports Ventures was formed in 2021.
