Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to visit the United States to participate in a series of global-themed events, including meetings with Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy's main focus during the visit is to address the United Nations General Assembly and share his "Victory Plan" with President Biden, Vice President Harris, and former President Trump. These discussions are crucial as maintaining U.S. assistance for Ukraine, especially during the ongoing presidential transition, remains a top priority for the White House amidst the conflict with Russia.
President Biden is also set to address the UN General Assembly and meet with Zelenskyy at the White House during the week. The White House expressed its commitment to supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression, with discussions expected to cover the state of the war between Russia and Ukraine. Additionally, Zelenskyy is pushing for the lifting of restrictions on Ukraine's use of Western-supplied long-range missiles against Russian targets, a matter he recently discussed with Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The Biden administration is preparing to deliver another round of military aid to Ukraine by the end of September to bolster Ukraine's position on the battlefield and at the negotiating table. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan highlighted the importance of providing support to Ukraine to ensure its strength in negotiations. Apart from his engagements with Zelenskyy, President Biden is also hosting the Quad Leaders Summit with leaders of Australia, India, and Japan, focusing on their shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
Former President Trump is also expected to meet with Zelenskyy during his U.S. visit, while expressing his intention to meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well. These meetings are significant in addressing various international relations matters, including trade relationships and regional security concerns. Vice President Harris is also expected to attend part of the Quad summit; however, her office has not confirmed her attendance at the moment. A potential meeting between Modi and Harris would hold symbolic importance given the personal and cultural connections between the Indian American community and India.
