Snowy Mountains Councillor Faces Controversy Despite Election Win
Andrew Thaler, a resident of Nimmitabel in the Snowy Mountains region of New South Wales, has secured a seat on the Snowy Monaro Regional Council despite being banned from council premises due to past behavior.
Thaler, who has previously run unsuccessfully in local, state, and federal elections, will now serve a four-year term on the council. However, his presence will be limited as he is not allowed to attend council offices or events.
This ban stems from a "long history of negative behaviors towards previous councillors, council staff, and other members of the community," according to a council spokesperson. The spokesperson cited the Work Health and Safety Act 2011, which requires employers to provide a safe workplace.
Thaler disputes the ban, arguing that it is unfair and impractical. He claims the council is launching a "media attack" against him before he has even taken office. He also criticizes the council's suggestion that he attend meetings electronically, citing unreliable internet connections in the region.
Thaler has also faced recent controversies. In 2023, he claimed to be the "family spokesperson" for Clare Nowland, a 95-year-old woman who died after allegedly being tasered by police. Nowland's family denied this claim and urged the media not to engage with Thaler.
Additionally, assault charges against Thaler were dropped in August after an allegation that he choked a woman outside a cafe. During a court hearing, he was removed by corrections staff after questioning the authority of the magistrate.
Several female politicians, including NSW Nationals Deputy Bronnie Taylor and former Member for Monaro Nichole Overall, have shown support for the alleged victim in the assault case.
Former Mayor of the Snowy Monaro Regional Council, Narelle Davis, stated that Thaler has been banned from council premises since 2018 due to his behavior. She expressed concern about his ability to work as a team player.
Fellow councillor Tanya Higgins also expressed surprise at Thaler's election and uncertainty about how his presence will impact the council.
Thaler maintains that the ban makes him feel excluded and hinders his ability to participate fully. He claims he treats everyone with respect until they disrespect him, at which point he holds them accountable.
The next council meeting with the newly elected members will take place on October 10th, where the vote for mayor and deputy mayor will occur. It remains to be seen how Thaler's presence will affect the council's dynamics and its ability to function effectively.
