Putin and Pezeshkian Discuss Growing Ties Between Russia and Iran
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met in Turkmenistan on Friday, where they discussed the growing economic ties and similar worldviews between their countries. This meeting has raised concerns in the United States.
Putin, facing international isolation due to the war in Ukraine, is eager to strengthen ties with countries outside the Western sphere. He invited Pezeshkian to visit Russia for an official visit, which the Iranian leader accepted.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation between their countries, citing their shared interests and complementary capacities. They also expressed their desire to finalize a strategic partnership agreement soon.
The United States is concerned about the growing relationship between Russia and Iran, particularly in light of accusations that Iran has supplied Russia with ballistic missiles for use in the Ukraine conflict. Russia and Iran deny these accusations.
Despite these concerns, Putin and Pezeshkian reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in all areas, including the international arena. They also criticized the actions of Israel in the Middle East, which they believe are backed by the U.S. and the EU.
Putin concluded by stating that a new world order is emerging, with new centers of economic growth and political influence. He expressed Russia's support for international discussions on this multipolar world and its openness to discussing it within various forums.
