Hungary Pushes for Bulgaria and Romania's Schengen Entry

Hungary's Interior Minister, Sándor Pintér, announced that the abolishment of checks at Bulgaria and Romania's land borders will be discussed at the European interior ministers meeting in December. This comes after Bulgaria and Romania presented their progress towards full Schengen membership at the Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting on October 10th in Luxembourg.

Minister Pintér expressed optimism that the final step towards full Schengen membership for both countries could be taken by the end of the year. He noted that Austria, which has previously raised concerns, had received answers to all its questions.

However, Bulgaria's Caretaker Minister of Interior, Atanas Ilkov, reported that while he had discussions with his Austrian counterpart regarding Bulgaria's land entry into Schengen, Austria has not yet provided a definitive position on the matter.

It remains to be seen whether Austria will ultimately support Bulgaria and Romania's full Schengen membership. The December meeting of European interior ministers will be crucial in determining the next steps for both countries.
