Tokyo Capsule Hotel Analyzes Guest Sleep Data to Improve Sleep and Develop Products

A Tokyo Capsule Hotel Analyzing Guest Sleep Data

The Sleep Lab, a capsule hotel near Shinagawa Station in Tokyo, is taking sleep analysis to a new level. Opened in August 2023, the hotel collects and analyzes heart rates, breathing frequencies, and other sleep data from its guests to improve the quality of their sleep. This data will also be used to help companies develop better sleep-related products.

The Sleep Lab is a collaboration between information technology provider NTT Data Japan Corp. and sleep analysis service supplier Nine Hours Inc. The hotel has 70 rooms exclusively for men, with prices ranging from 8,000 to 9,000 yen per night.

Each capsule unit is equipped with an infrared camera and a directional microphone above the guest's head. These devices record sleeping hours, the number of rolls and apneas, snoring volume, and other sleep details. Guests receive reports about their sleep afterwards, and their anonymous data can be sold to companies with their consent.

The hotel also sells bedclothes and food items designed to promote sound sleep, along with freebies. Guests who try these items can provide feedback to the manufacturers. The project hopes to use the analysis results to verify the products' effectiveness and develop new goods.

The Sleep Lab is housed in an NTT Data commercial complex and operated by Nine Hours. Nine Hours already offers sleeping data to corporate customers, and with NTT Data's expertise, they aim to use the information even more effectively. Future plans include using a deep body temperature sensor under NTT development and extending the program to include women.
