Prime Minister Ishiba Faces Challenges in Securing Power amid Election Loss

The Liberal Democratic Party, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, is facing challenges as it strives to secure the necessary votes in the Diet to keep power after a significant loss in the Lower House election. While Ishiba is considered a natural choice for the party due to his position as LDP president, some party members are pushing for him to step down to bear accountability for the ruling coalition's failure to maintain a majority in the election.

The upcoming special Diet session, scheduled to open as early as November 11, will involve a vote in both chambers to decide the next prime minister. Despite holding a majority in the less powerful Upper House, the LDP-Komeito coalition's diminished seats in the Lower House-election results have left them short of the 233-seat majority required in the 465-seat chamber. Following the election, the LDP has been reaching out to the opposition bloc for support in the Diet vote and future cooperation, with contacts being made to parties such as Nippon Ishin and the Democratic Party for the People.
