Meta's Advancements in Robotic Touch and Human-Robot Interaction
Meta's AI research team, FAIR, is making significant strides in robotics, focusing on giving robots the ability to "feel," move with skill, and work alongside people. These advancements aim to create robots that are not only technically capable but also able to handle real-world tasks in a way that feels natural and safe around humans.
This touch-sensing technology allows AI to recognize textures, pressure, and even movement through touch, not just sight. Unlike many AI systems that require labeled data for each task, Sparsh uses raw data, making it more adaptable and accurate across various tasks.
This advanced artificial fingertip boasts human-level touch sensitivity. It can sense tiny differences in texture and detect very small forces, capturing touch details similar to a human finger. Its powerful lens covers the whole fingertip, allowing it to "see" in all directions and react to different temperatures.
This system connects multiple touch sensors across a robotic hand, giving it a sense of touch from fingertips to palm. This enables the creation of robotic hands that can move with the fine-tuned control humans have, making them capable of handling fragile or irregular objects.
To ensure wider access to these cutting-edge tools, Meta has partnered with GelSight Inc. and Wonik Robotics. GelSight will produce and distribute the Digit 360 fingertip sensor, while Wonik will integrate the Plexus technology into their existing robotic hand model, Allegro Hand.
Beyond physical skills, robots also need to work well with people. Meta's PARTNR tool addresses this by simulating household tasks and situations with "virtual" human partners. This allows robots to practice and learn important social and spatial skills, such as knowing how to move in shared spaces or adapt to human instructions.
Robots with fine-touch skills could assist in surgeries or provide gentle caregiving.
Robots could handle fragile items or work on complex assembly tasks.
Robots and VR devices could "feel" objects, creating more immersive experiences.
