Former Ohio Police Officer Convicted of Murder in Shooting of Andre Hill
A former Ohio police officer, Adam Coy, was convicted of murder on Monday for the shooting of Andre Hill, a Black man who was holding a cellphone and keys when he was killed. Coy, who served nearly 20 years with the Columbus police force, shot Hill four times in a garage nearly four years ago.
Coy claimed he thought Hill was holding a gun, but body camera footage showed Hill only had a phone and keys. He was fired after the shooting and later told jurors he was "horrified" when he realized his mistake.
The jury also found Coy guilty of reckless homicide and felonious assault. He faces at least 15 years in prison.
Hill's family and supporters hope the verdict sends a message that police violence won't be tolerated. "It's been way too long, but I'm glad it's over," said Hill's sister, Shawna Barnett. "It's time to stop. It's time to make everything fair."
However, the police union president expressed shock and concern, saying the conviction could have "ripple effects" for officers.
The case has sparked renewed calls for accountability in law enforcement. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said the verdict shows "no one is above the law."
Coy had a history of complaints against him, including excessive force allegations. The city of Columbus reached a $10 million settlement with Hill's family, the largest in its history.
