ABC News Apologizes for Editing Errors in "Line of Fire" Reports

ABC News boss Justin Stevens has apologized for editing errors in the 2022 "Line of Fire" reports, which investigated the conduct of Australian troops in Afghanistan.

An independent review found that additional gunshots were inaccurately added to both online and broadcast versions of the story. The review also found that comments from former US Drug Enforcement Administration leader Bret Hamilton were taken out of context.

Mr. Stevens acknowledged the errors and apologized to audiences, commandos, and Mr. Hamilton. He stated that the ABC would publish corrections and review its editorial policies to prevent similar issues from happening again.

The review also made recommendations for improving the accuracy and fairness of future investigations. Mr. Stevens said he would consider these recommendations and take further actions to ensure the integrity of ABC News reporting.

The final report, including findings on the circumstances surrounding a letter ABC Legal received raising concerns about the audio editing, is still pending.
