India to Test New Long-Range Anti-Ship Ballistic Missile
India is gearing up to test a new long-range anti-ship ballistic missile capable of striking moving warships or aircraft carriers at distances exceeding 1,000 kilometers. The test launch, expected within the next few days, will be conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
This new missile system, designed for the Indian Navy, will significantly enhance its ability to neutralize enemy vessels from afar. It can be launched from both warships and shore-based locations, providing flexibility in deployment.
The development of this anti-ship ballistic missile comes amidst a growing emphasis on ballistic missiles within the Indian armed forces. Both the Indian Army and Air Force have placed orders for Pralay ballistic missiles, with plans to gradually increase their inventory of short and medium-range missiles. This expansion aims to equip the forces with the capability to sustain prolonged conflicts.
The increasing use of ballistic missiles in recent conflicts, including by non-state actors, has highlighted the need for such capabilities. India's ongoing border tensions with China, which possesses a substantial rocket force and a vast arsenal of long-range weapons, further underscores the importance of developing this technology.
Indian forces have engaged in extensive discussions regarding the establishment of a dedicated organization with a substantial inventory of ballistic missiles to effectively address emerging security challenges. The upcoming test of the new anti-ship ballistic missile represents a significant step towards bolstering India's defense capabilities and ensuring its preparedness in the face of evolving threats.
