Relaxation, not Mystical Experiences, Key to Psychedelic Therapy Success

A new study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology challenges the long-held belief that mystical experiences are the driving force behind the antidepressant effects of psychedelic therapy. Instead, the research suggests that feelings of relaxation are the strongest predictor of positive outcomes.

The study, led by Gregor Hasler at Switzerland's University of Fribourg, involved 28 patients with treatment-resistant psychiatric disorders like depression and anxiety, as well as 28 healthy participants. All participants received either LSD or psilocybin in a therapeutic setting designed to promote calmness and reflection.

After their sessions, patients showed a significant reduction in depression symptoms, lasting up to a week. However, unlike previous studies, the researchers found no link between mystical experiences and antidepressant response. Instead, relaxation emerged as the key predictor of therapeutic success.

"This study contributes to the ongoing discussion about the best approach to psychotherapy in conjunction with psychedelic therapy," stated Hasler. He added that "relaxation on the day of substance administration is a key factor for treatment success and is potentially modifiable."

The researchers suggest incorporating additional relaxation techniques, such as breathing exercises and mindfulness practices, to enhance therapy outcomes. These methods could help patients enter a calm, open mindset, maximizing the benefits of psychedelic therapy.

While the study's naturalistic design limits its ability to pinpoint the exact mechanisms of psychedelic therapy, it highlights the importance of relaxation in the therapeutic process. Future research with larger samples and more controlled settings could further explore the role of relaxation and other techniques in optimizing psychedelic therapy outcomes.

This study's findings offer valuable insights for therapists and researchers working with psychedelics. By focusing on creating a calm and supportive environment, therapists can help patients achieve the deep emotional engagement necessary for therapeutic progress. Additionally, incorporating relaxation techniques could further enhance the effectiveness of psychedelic therapy, leading to better outcomes for patients struggling with treatment-resistant mental health conditions.
