Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) to Appeal Supreme Court Verdict on Sub-classification within SC/ST Reservation
The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), a key ally in the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has announced its intention to appeal the Supreme Court's verdict allowing sub-classification within the reservation system for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
Party chief and Union Minister Chirag Paswan expressed disagreement with the court's observation, arguing that the basis for Scheduled Caste classification is untouchability, not educational background. He further contended that the concept of "creamy layer" cannot be applied to Scheduled Castes due to the inherent social stigma and discrimination they face.
"A Dalit is not allowed to enter temples. Reservation within reservation is not correct. LJP (Ram Vilas) is going to file a plea for reconsideration in SC," Paswan stated.
The LJP (Ram Vilas) maintains that the Supreme Court's order failed to mention untouchability, the core reason for Scheduled Caste classification. Paswan highlighted the continued prevalence of discrimination against Dalits, citing instances of Dalit grooms being prevented from riding horses and educated Scheduled Caste individuals facing social exclusion despite their economic status.
The Supreme Court's 6:1 verdict on August 1st permitted the sub-classification of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, enabling the creation of separate quotas for marginalized members within these communities. The court clarified that such sub-classification schemes must be supported by quantifiable data and based on objective criteria rather than political considerations.
While the verdict aims to address the needs of the most disadvantaged within these communities, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) remains unconvinced and intends to pursue its appeal. The party's stance highlights the ongoing debate surrounding reservation policies and the complexities involved in ensuring equitable access to opportunities for all sections of society.
