Political Parties in Bulgaria Discuss Anti-Corruption Legislation and Potential Partnerships
Two Bulgarian political parties, PP-DB and MECH, share common goals regarding anti-corruption legislation but differ on potential partnerships in government. During a meeting to discuss forming a government, MECH leader Radostin Vasilev rejected cooperation with GERB and proposed including "Vazrazhdane" in an anti-GERB and anti-DPS coalition. While Vasilev agreed with isolating Peevski, he advocated for a broader political alliance against Borisov and Peevski. PP-DB's Kiril Petkov firmly rejected cooperation with "Vazrazhdane" due to ideological differences. Regarding anti-corruption legislation, Petkov expressed hope for collaboration with MECH but rejected their proposals for nationalizing Lukoil and closing collection companies.
Another party, There Is Such a People (ITN), also supports anti-corruption legislation and a "cordon sanitaire" around Delyan Peevski. They presented their priorities at a meeting with PP-DB, including changes to the Electoral Code, voter list cleansing, and amendments to the Judicial System Act. ITN also proposed limiting the Prosecutor General's powers, amending the Constitution regarding caretaker governments, and restoring the old method of appointing them by the president. Additionally, they suggested changes to the conditions for holding referendums.
Following another meeting initiated by PP-DB, the Alliance for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) agreed to sign the declaration for a "cordon sanitaire" around Delyan Peevski and his party, DPS – A New Beginning. They also pledged support for the anti-corruption legislative package.
