At the official presentation of the inspection findings following a tragic crash involving a training airplane at the "Graf Ignatievo" airport, Minister of Defense Atanas Zapryanov emphasized a long-standing issue of inadequate serviceable aviation equipment within the Air Force. This issue has persisted over the years across different aviation platforms, ranging from the MiG-29 fighters to the Su-25 aircraft, L-39 training airplanes, Spartan transport aircraft, Cougar helicopters, and particularly the Mi-17 helicopters, according to the minister's remarks.
Minister Zapryanov highlighted that the shortage of operational aircraft has had a direct impact on the Air Force's ability to maintain the necessary flight hours for pilots to conduct essential tasks and combat training exercises. This insufficiency in aircraft availability poses a significant challenge in ensuring pilot proficiency and readiness, essential for the Air Force's operational effectiveness.
Additionally, Minister Zapryanov mentioned that while a portion of the information in the inspection report is classified, it will be shared with the Air Force Command and the heads of Air Force bases. This move signifies a commitment to addressing the deficiencies in aviation equipment and taking steps to improve the operational capabilities and safety within the Air Force following the tragic incident.
