The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office Takes Action Against Migrant Trafficking Ring
The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office has initiated pre-trial proceedings against an organized criminal group involved in the trafficking of migrants. The investigation uncovered evidence of 16 Romanian citizens who repeatedly crossed Bulgarian territory to illegally transport a total of 142 foreigners.
A joint investigation team, formed by the Bulgarian and Romanian prosecutor's offices with the assistance of Eurojust, the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation, played a crucial role in gathering evidence. Following court approval, the Bulgarian examining prosecutor issued a European Investigation Order to Romanian authorities, leading to 13 searches in 11 towns and villages. These searches yielded a significant amount of documents, electronic information carriers, and other evidence.
The investigation continues as authorities analyze the evidence collected in Romania. The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office remains committed to dismantling human trafficking networks and protecting vulnerable individuals.
