PP-DB's Stance on Speaker Election and Coalition Formation
The PP-DB coalition has declared that they will not support a candidate for Speaker of the 51st Parliament from any party that has not supported their declaration for a cordon sanitaire against Delyan Peevski. They believe this is the only way to isolate the leader of "DPS - New Beginning" from any influence on power in the country. This statement was made by Kiril Petkov from PP after the eighth unsuccessful attempt to elect the Speaker of the National Assembly.
Atanas Atanasov from DB emphasized the need to find new candidates, as the National Assembly needs to function. However, the election process is further complicated by the recent amendments to the Constitution. These amendments, introduced by the National Assembly in 2023, allow the President of the National Assembly to head the caretaker government if a regular government cannot be formed. This caretaker government would then be responsible for organizing new parliamentary elections. The draft with these amendments was proposed by PP-DB, GERB-SDS, and DPS, with Delyan Peevski as the chairman of the parliamentary group.
