Assam Makes Strides in 'Har Ghar Jal', Discusses Water Management with Union Minister

Assam Achieves Over 80% of Tap Water Connection Target

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state has achieved over 80% of its tap water connection target. He made the announcement after a meeting with Union Minister of Jal Shakti, C R Paatil, in New Delhi.

Sarma stated that Assam is vigorously implementing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Har Ghar Jal', which aims to provide tap water connections to every rural household in India by 2024. He further discussed the roadmap for achieving complete saturation of the Jal Jeevan Mission in the state.

In response, Paatil highlighted the focus of the discussion on managing Assam's water resources effectively. They discussed various topics, including expanding the Shallow Tube Well Irrigation Scheme under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana, approving new surface minor irrigation schemes, modernizing old CAD projects, and the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission.

The Jal Jeevan Mission is a flagship program of the Indian government, aiming to provide safe and adequate drinking water to every rural household. The program is implemented in partnership with states and union territories.

The initiative has significantly impacted the lives of millions of women in India, who previously spent considerable time fetching water. With access to tap water, they can now engage in more productive activities, including agriculture and allied work. This has led to a notable increase in women's participation in these sectors at the national level.
