Riot Games Updates Terms of Service to Include Off-Platform Misconduct by Creators

Riot Games has announced a significant update to its terms of service concerning creators, extending its policies to address off-platform misconduct linked to broadcasts or content creation associated with the company's games. Effective starting Jan. 3, 2025, this change is intended to ensure that creators are held responsible for their actions, even when operating outside Riot's game environment. This means that creators can now face penalties for behaviors like using hateful language or engaging in inappropriate conduct while streaming or creating content related to Riot's games, regardless of whether these actions occur within the actual game.

According to Riot Games, the updated terms of service give the company the authority to impose penalties for off-platform misconduct, emphasizing that actions violating their terms can result in restrictions on access to Riot accounts or Partner program privileges for creators. The company clarified that if creators engage in behaviors that breach the terms of service while broadcasting or producing content about Riot's games, they may have their Riot accounts restricted or their Partner privileges suspended. This enforcement approach is applicable to both creators who are part of Riot's Partner program and those who are not affiliated with it, ensuring that consequences can be faced for off-platform conduct related to Riot Games.

In addition to addressing off-platform misconduct by creators, Riot Games also revealed its intention to implement restrictions on access to a player's entire Riot account for any violations of its terms of service guidelines. This measure includes the suspension of access to all Riot games and services if misconduct is identified that goes against the company's established policies. These updates represent a concerted effort by Riot Games to maintain a standard of behavior and accountability from creators, extending their enforcement reach beyond in-game actions to encompass behavior in off-platform contexts related to their games.
