A Stonemason Living with Silicosis
Joshua Bucklow, a 42-year-old stonemason, used to enjoy an active life playing football and Oz Tag. However, his life changed dramatically when he was diagnosed with silicosis in 2019. Silicosis is a lung disease caused by inhaling silica dust, which is commonly found in engineered stone.
Bucklow believes his illness is a result of his 17-year career as a stonemason, during which he regularly installed kitchen benchtops made from engineered stone. He is now pursuing compensation for his illness from his former employer, Pacific Stone, and the suppliers and manufacturers of the engineered stone.
Bucklow's case highlights the dangers of engineered stone and the ongoing legal battle surrounding it. He is one of many workers who have been diagnosed with silicosis after working with the material. In July 2023, Australia became the first country in the world to ban engineered stone due to its health risks.
Bucklow's story is a reminder of the importance of workplace safety and the need for companies to take responsibility for the health of their employees. He is hopeful that his case will help to raise awareness about the dangers of engineered stone and ensure that other workers are not exposed to the same risks.
