GSDP Conversation Series on Gender and Diversity in Climate

The 6th edition of the GSDP Conversation Series, themed "Gender and Diversity in the Changing Climate," was successfully held at the Goethe-Institute in Kolkata, emphasizing the crucial role of gender equality and diversity in building resilience against climate-related issues like natural resource depletion and biodiversity loss. The GSDP, established in 2022 under the Indo-German Partnership for Green and Sustainable Development, embodies the joint commitment of India and Germany to address global climate challenges and promote sustainable development through cooperation that aligns with the SDGs and the Paris Agreement.

The event gathered policymakers, women farmers, academics, multilateral institutions, and civil society representatives for discussions on gender-responsive and inclusive approaches to climate action. It showcased initiatives such as using Geographic Information Systems for local planning, street theater to challenge gender norms, and programs encouraging women's leadership in Farmer Producer Organizations. The Consul General of the German Consulate in Kolkata, Barbara Voss, highlighted the importance of inclusivity and equity in climate change solutions, particularly in regions like Eastern India with a substantial population.

The impact of GSDP projects like the Enhancing Rural Resilience through Appropriate Development Actions (ERADA) was exemplified by Rina Devi, a beneficiary from Bihar, whose participation led to economic empowerment, increased income, and social contributions within her community. The event also shed light on Germany's Feminist Development and Foreign Policy, emphasizing Rights, Resources, and Representation to address gender inequality. Speakers like Julie Reviere from GIZ India emphasized the significance of placing women at the forefront, even in traditionally male-dominated sectors, to achieve meaningful and inclusive outcomes. The conversation was enriched by expert insights from professionals specializing in natural resource management, UN Women, and German development cooperation.
