Prosecutor General Election Mired in Controversy and Delays

A Stalemate

The election of a new Prosecutor General in Bulgaria has been mired in controversy and delays. The only candidate nominated, current acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov, is set to face a hearing before the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on January 16, 2025. However, the process has been met with criticism and calls for suspension.

Communications expert Vessislava Tancheva believes the protracted procedure is a deliberate tactic to bring about early elections and postpone legislation. This would allow Sarafov to assume the post of Prosecutor General in mid-January.

Bar associations have also called on the SJC to suspend the election, citing concerns about the process and Sarafov's qualifications. Additionally, the President and the Judges oppose the SJC's plan to elect the next Prosecutor General.

Meanwhile, the election of a new chairman for the Supreme Administrative Council has also stalled. No nominations were made at the recent SJC plenum meeting. The deadline for submitting nominations is December 19, and the election is scheduled for March 20, 2025.

The current situation highlights the ongoing challenges and political tensions surrounding the judicial system in Bulgaria. The lack of consensus and transparency in the selection process raises concerns about the independence and effectiveness of the Prosecutor's Office and the Supreme Administrative Council.
