Bulgaria Eagerly Awaits Schengen Entry

MEP Andrey Novakov expressed Bulgaria's readiness to join the Schengen Area in its entirety, starting January 1st, 2024. He made this statement during a press conference at the Bulgarian news agency BTA in Vidin.

Prior to the conference, Novakov, accompanied by caretaker Minister of Transport Krasimira Stoyanova, Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov, and other officials, visited the Danube Bridge 2 border checkpoint at Vidin-Kalafat.

Novakov emphasized the positive impact Schengen accession would have on the Bulgarian economy and transport sector. He expects it to remove the inconvenience of long border queues and allow Bulgarian businesses to compete on a more level playing field with their counterparts in Central and Western Europe.

The final decision on Bulgaria and Romania's accession to Schengen by land is anticipated at the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting on December 12th.
