Parliament Halts Prosecutor General Election Due to Judiciary Act Amendments

Legal Committee Halts Prosecutor General Election

The Legal Committee in Parliament has unanimously decided to suspend the election of the Prosecutor General scheduled for January 16th. This decision comes in response to the recent amendments to the Judiciary Act, which are expected to be discussed in the National Assembly on Wednesday, January 15th.

The amendments stipulate that any ongoing procedures for electing the Prosecutor General, the chairs of the Supreme Administrative Court, and the Supreme Cassation Court will be terminated if they haven't been finalized with a presidential decree by the time the amendments come into effect. This means that even if the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) were to elect Borislav Sarafov, the current acting Prosecutor General, on January 16th, the election could be nullified if the President delays his final signature and the amendments are enacted in the meantime.

Despite the suspension of the election, Borislav Sarafov may remain acting Prosecutor General and participate in the next election process. This information was confirmed by reporter Silvia Velikova.
