Prime Minister Ishiba Addresses Coalition, Reform, and Regional Revitalization
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, speaking at a New Year's news conference in Ise, Mie Prefecture, addressed the possibility of a multiparty coalition government, political reform, and his regional revitalization project.
Ishiba denied the possibility of seeking a grand coalition after opposition leaders rejected his suggestion for such an alliance. He clarified that while he had mentioned a grand coalition as an option on a radio program, it would only be meaningful if a clear purpose for its formation was established.
The Prime Minister also discussed political reform, stating his intention to seek consensus on banning political donations from companies and organizations before the end of the current fiscal year. He also emphasized the need for cross-party discussions on election systems to ensure they accurately reflect the will of the people.
Regarding his regional revitalization project, Ishiba announced plans to relocate central government ministries and agencies outside the capital. He also addressed concerns raised by Japanese industry officials about future investments following U.S. President Joe Biden's decision to block Nippon Steel Corp.'s proposed acquisition of U.S. Steel. Ishiba stated his intention to urge the U.S. government to clarify its national security concerns regarding the deal.
