Tokyo's Ota Ward Partners with Businesses to Create Sustainable Aviation Fuel from Waste Cooking Oil
In a significant step towards a more sustainable future, Tokyo's Ota Ward has joined forces with Japan Airlines Co. and supermarket chain operator Daiei Inc. to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from waste cooking oil. This initiative, announced on November 21st, also involves four other private businesses, marking a collaborative effort to reduce carbon emissions.
The agreement aims to collect waste cooking oil from households and convert it into SAF, a cleaner alternative to traditional jet fuel. Residents are encouraged to purchase specially designed 1-liter bottles for collecting used cooking oil. Additionally, supermarkets and other outlets will be equipped with purpose-built oil collection tanks. Currently, five outlets have these tanks installed, with plans to expand this network across the ward in the coming months and years.
This initiative aligns with Ota Ward's commitment to creating a carbon-free society. Mayor Akimasa Suzuki expressed his hope that residents, especially those living near Haneda Airport, will actively participate in this effort. By learning about SAF and contributing to its production, the community can play a vital role in reducing the ward's carbon footprint and promoting a more sustainable future.
This partnership exemplifies the growing collaboration between government and private entities in tackling environmental challenges. By harnessing the power of collective action and innovative solutions, communities can make significant strides towards a cleaner and greener future.
