Baramulla MP Rashid Engineer Granted Custody Parole for Parliament Session
Jammu and Kashmir MLA Khursheed Ahmad Sheikh, brother of Baramulla MP Rashid Engineer, expressed his happiness after the Delhi High Court granted custody parole to Engineer for two days to attend the ongoing Parliament budget session. Engineer, who is currently lodged in Tihar Jail in connection with a terror funding case, had been on a hunger strike for 11 days.
Sheikh celebrated the end of his brother's hunger strike and expressed his relief that Engineer would now be able to represent the people of Baramulla in Parliament. He added that the voices of the 18 lakh people whom Engineer represents would now be heard.
The Delhi High Court granted custody parole to Engineer on the grounds that he currently lacks a remedy regarding the adjudication of his bail application, which is delayed due to the issue surrounding the designation of a court. Justice Vikas Mahajan remarked, "Custody parole is being granted for two days, as he does not have a remedy at this time."
However, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), opposing Engineer's custody parole, emphasized that his request was generic and stressed that he had no speech to deliver. The High Court imposed several conditions on Engineer's parole, including a ban on his use of mobile phones, landlines, or the internet. Additionally, he is prohibited from addressing the media or interacting with anyone during this period.
Engineer will be escorted by police officials under tight security to and from the parliament.
