OpenAI is streamlining its artificial intelligence offerings as CEO Sam Altman detailed plans to phase out the standalone ‘o3’ model. Instead, the company intends for its upcoming GPT-4.5—internally known as Orion—to be the final model available outside of its integrated system. Following this, GPT-5 will be introduced as a unified system within ChatGPT and its corresponding API, incorporating improvements from the former ‘o3’ model.
free tier users will have unlimited access at a standard level, while Plus and Pro subscribers can access enhanced intelligence levels.
This decision comes after reports revealed that the ‘o3’ model could cost up to $3,000 per query, highlighting concerns about its economic feasibility. In parallel to these software changes, OpenAI is moving forward with plans to develop its own AI chip, which would reduce its dependence on Nvidia, with forthcoming steps involving its design submission to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Additionally, there are ongoing discussions in the industry, such as the proposal by Elon Musk to acquire OpenAI's nonprofit division, although that offer appears unlikely to be accepted by the board.
