In a strongly worded critique, Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP of admitting its inability to govern following the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, a move that came shortly after Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s resignation. Gandhi directly implicated Prime Minister Modi in the crisis, questioning whether he intended to visit Manipur to outline a plan for restoring peace amid the state’s ongoing challenges.
Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal echoed these concerns by describing the President’s Rule as a “glimmer of hope” for a state ravaged by nearly two years of intermittent violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Venugopal accused the current administration of having repeatedly resorted to political maneuvering rather than effective governance, urging the central government to abandon divisive politics and commit to an inclusive approach that could foster lasting reconciliation and stability in Manipur.
The turmoil in Manipur, which has escalated following a rally and subsequent fallout from a High Court order regarding the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes list, has led to widespread discontent. Meanwhile, a BJP spokesperson confirmed that the state assembly had been effectively suspended in the wake of the former Chief Minister’s resignation, who expressed gratitude for the central government's intervention that had, according to him, enabled various developmental initiatives.
