A National Quest for Quantum Solutions
The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) is on a mission to harness the power of quantum computing for tackling major societal issues in Japan. To achieve this, they are launching a nationwide competition in March 2025, inviting individuals and teams from diverse backgrounds to bring their innovative ideas to the table.
The competition boasts a prize pool of approximately 200 million yen ($1.3 million), with the winning solutions for each challenge receiving a minimum of 20 million yen. This initiative aims to attract untapped talent and expertise, including those without prior experience in quantum computing, such as corporate researchers and International Mathematical Olympiad winners.
To bridge the knowledge gap, NEDO is offering free courses to equip participants with the necessary understanding of quantum computing. This open approach aims to spark creative solutions from individuals and teams who can think outside the box and contribute fresh perspectives.
The competition will focus on three key societal issues, which will be selected through an open call for suggestions from the public. These issues are likely to encompass challenges related to natural disasters, the aging population, and other pressing concerns facing Japan.
Participants will compete individually or in groups, developing innovative solutions that leverage the power of quantum computing to address these societal challenges. The final judging committee will convene in August 2026 to select the winning solutions.
This competition represents a significant step towards harnessing the potential of quantum computing for social good. By bringing together diverse minds and fostering collaboration, NEDO hopes to unlock groundbreaking solutions that can improve the lives of people across Japan.
