A Closer Look
WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature that will allow users to link their Instagram profiles to their WhatsApp accounts. This integration aims to streamline social media presence within the messaging platform, making it easier for contacts to connect and discover users' online identities.
The feature was discovered in the iOS beta version 25.2.10.72 of WhatsApp, accessible through the TestFlight program. However, it remains under development and currently inactive, meaning beta testers cannot yet experiment with it.
According to WABetaInfo, a screenshot reveals that WhatsApp will introduce a new "Add Links" section within profile settings. Users can then add their Instagram usernames by tapping a plus (+) icon, making their profiles visible on their WhatsApp account.
Interestingly, the current implementation does not require users to authenticate their added Instagram profiles. This raises concerns about potential privacy issues, impersonation, and identity theft. However, it is likely that WhatsApp will introduce an authentication step before the feature's public release.
The Instagram linking option is expected to be optional, allowing users to choose whether or not to connect their profiles. A similar feature already exists for WhatsApp Business accounts, where businesses can link their Instagram profiles but must manually log in to authenticate them.
Currently, the feature is said to support only Instagram, but speculation suggests that WhatsApp could expand it to include other Meta-owned platforms like Facebook and Threads. It remains unclear whether third-party social networks such as X (formerly Twitter) or Snapchat will be supported in the future.
While there is no official confirmation from WhatsApp about the feature's release date, its appearance in beta testing suggests a potential wider rollout in a future update.
