Kiril Petkov to Face Trial over Arrest of Boyko Borissov
Kiril Petkov, co-chairman of the We Continue the Change party (PP), is set to stand trial over the arrest of former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov on March 17, 2022. The charges against Petkov were submitted to the Sofia City Court by prosecutors two months after he voluntarily waived his parliamentary immunity.
The charges stem from Petkov's alleged overstepping of his authority as Prime Minister. He is accused of ordering police chiefs to immediately open pre-trial proceedings against Borissov, former Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov, and GERB press secretary Sevdelina Arnaudova. This action is considered a violation of the law, as only investigators have the right to investigate members of the executive branch. Additionally, the prosecutor was not immediately informed of these actions, further contravening legal procedures.
Furthermore, Petkov is accused of ordering the 24-hour detention of the three individuals with the intention of undermining their reputation and the prestige of the executive power.
The trial date has not yet been set.
