Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group is in advanced discussions to secure a 67% stake in the Gujarat Titans, one of the Indian Premier League's prominent franchises. The deal involves acquiring the majority share from CVC Capital Partners, who had previously purchased the franchise in 2021 for Rs 5,625 crore.
Through its subsidiary, Torrent Sports Ventures, Torrent Group has been actively pursuing opportunities within the IPL framework. The company had earlier placed bids for other teams in Ahmedabad and Lucknow during the 2021 season, and even attempted to join the Women's Premier League by bidding for one of the available teams.
The acquisition proposal is currently under review by the IPL governing body, with the potential for Ook torrent to assume control of the team before the start of the upcoming season on March 21. An IPL insider noted that the discussions are well advanced and that the current agreement follows the end of a lock-in period for CVC as the sole owners until February 2025.
Gujarat Titans, who claimed the title in 2022 under Hardik Pandya and finished as runners-up in 2023, have experienced varied success over the past few seasons. Key players on the roster include Shubman Gill, Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan, England's Jos Buttler, and India's pacer Mohammed Siraj, underscoring the team's competitive caliber.
