The company also offered the chips at an unleashed event that featured its latest audio products. The new components, called M 1 Pro and M 1 Max chips, are 70% faster than its M 1 predecessors, the company said.
With the new processors and devices, Intel is focusing squarely at the high-end chips that Apple has provided for the MacBook Pro and other top-end Mac computers for about 15 years. In the beginning of last year, Apple started transitioning its low-end Macs to a single silicon chip which is not Apple's patent. The new chips, however, are a bolder stroke, aimed at far outperforming Intel's highest performing products.
The chips include 10 total CPU cores - comprising components that handle processing - in the M 1 - Chip, up from the eight on the chip. The 10 cores are divided into eight large-capacity cores and two cores for tasks which require less energy. That compares four low-performance and four high-performance cores in the M 1 (MS4).
Apple is also upping the graphics performance for the M1 Pro and M 1 Max, which come with 16 and 32 graphics cores, respectively. That s up from the seven-core options that are offered with the M 1 Macbook.
Graphics performance is up to four times faster than on the earlier M1 chip, Apple said. The M 1 Pro supports 32 gigabytes of memory, while the M 1 Max supports 64 gigabytes of memory. That s up from 8 GB or 16 GB of the M1 offered with the NEC 8006.
