Benedine convent transformed into a stately home hits market with guide price of 3.5 million

Get thee to the Nunnery — a mid- 13th century Benedictine convent in Cumbria, England, which has been transformed into a stately home, hit the market earlier this week with a guide price of 3.5 million US $4.3 million The Nunnery is an outstanding Grade-I listed hall, which has been meticulously renovated and extended to create a superb country residence, listing agent Will Douglas of Savills said in a statement. The setting is unrivaled with formal gardens, falling away to parkland, woodlands and unique private waterfalls. The listing, which went live earlier this month, also includes a stretch of Croglin Water, a tributary that leads to the Eden River. According to Historic England, the home's Grade I listing means it is a building of exceptional interest. Only 2.5% of the listed buildings in the country are Grade I.

The listing shows 11 bedrooms over more than 11,000 square feet of the main house and has period details from additions in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, according to the listing. The listing said it was renovated by its current owners but retains wonderful historic features such as stone flag floors, exposed beams and traditional fireplaces.

The property also has an updated kitchen with a Wolf gas range cooker, an island and a dining nook with a door to the terrace and gardens. There are several light-filled reception rooms, including a dining room with a butlers pantry, a sitting room with exposed stonework and an Inglenook fireplace and a library garden room.

The listing said a huge courtyard is located at the centre of the structure, which is home to the estate office, garaging, workshops and storage rooms. There is also a three-bedroom house for staff, and the residence is surrounded by landscaped gardens and terraces that lead to parkland and mature woodlands.

The property was last changed hands in 2001, but there was no price recorded, according to the Land Registry. The seller was not available for comment.
