Brexit talks going to continue into new year under Liz Truss

The talks are going to continue into the new year under the direction of Foreign Minister Liz Truss, as the Northern Ireland Protocol is yet to be resolved, and with the resignation of former Brexit Minister, Lord David Frost. Taking to Twitter to discuss the right of sovereignty after Brexit, Conservative peer Lord Daniel Moylan said: "I can think of no higher definition of political integrity than to seek to remove a part of the country from foreign laws and restoring democracy to that part of it living under laws made with no say by them." Lord Moylan then went on to say: The people of Northern Ireland have no say in how laws are now made for them by the EU. Patti Fordyce, speaking to Lord Moylan, said : Couldn't agree more, but spending the last nearly two years being virtually ruled by decree hasn't convinced us that we have reached where we want to be yet. Lord Fordyce repeated: "But if you are discontented, you have the right to vote the government out." How can the people of Northern Ireland vote if they are discontented with EU law-making? It is a scandal in the 21st century of Europe. The European Union has been critical over the ongoing talks. The bloc's chief negotiator has claimed that London has breached a great deal of trust with Europe. After Brexit, European Commission vice president Maros Sefcovic told German news agency Der Spiegel that problems with the Northern Ireland Protocol were a way to maintain a free-flowing land border on the island of Ireland, which has resulted in the UK breaking international law in trying to get around the arrangement. He said he is still confident that a compromise can be found between the two sides, although he admitted that it won't be easy. Britain's farmer hails the EU split as the bloc tries to hamstring them.

After the resignation of Lord Frost earlier this month, Sefcovic told the Spiegel he is pragmatic about Foreign Secretary Liz Truss taking over the responsibility for post-Brexit negotiations with the EU. The commissioner warned that if Ms Truss were to trigger Article 16, a move that would effectively suspend the treaty between the UK and the EU, the foundation of the deal reached between the two sides would be jeopardy. Ms Truss said she remains prepared to invoke Article 16 if issues are not resolved. But Mr Sefcovic said that this is a very distracting element in the discussions. Simon Coveney, Irish Foreign Minister, said: We all know that we need to bring this discussion and negotiation to an end. He said that there will be elections in Northern Ireland in May. The elections will start in earnest at the end of February. This can't go on for months. Since the EU s single market for goods has been ruled out as a threat to the 1998 peace deal that ended three decades of sectarian conflict known as the Troubles because of the hard customs border on the island.
