And Mariya Gabriel, the European Union Commissioner for Innovation and Research, has blocked Britain from joining the project until it resolves the deepening row over the Northern Ireland Protocol. But now Parliament has a bold plan B by George Freeman MP, UK Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation.

But if the EU decides that Northern Ireland is part of Horizon Europe, then we have a bold plan B! The British Scientist posted: This looks pretty big. Horizon Europe started. Or go with Plan B - create a bespoke international collaboration fund? The UK does have a small existing research fund for international collaboration on scientific innovation.

The Fund for International Collaboration is a 160 million dollar fund, which supports international cooperation.

Ms Gabriel said: I think that it is important on both sides to confirm our opinion to advance in association, but only after the framework has been agreed by both sides. Since its exit in Northern Ireland's post-Brexit status has been one of the most heated issues between Britain and the EU.

He said: From our perspective, we look at the EU and see an organisation that doesn t seem to want to get back to constructive working together.

He said the blocking of the entry of the UK into Horizon Europe was an example of this. A Government spokeswoman said: The UK stands ready to formalize our association with Horizon Europe at the earliest opportunity, but there have been persistent delays from the EU. We have always been clear that our priority is to support the UK s research and development sector and we will continue to do this in all future scenarios.
