China says it is conducting drills in seas, skies near Taiwan

BEIJING China's military said on Monday it is conducting drills in the seas and skies around Taiwan on Monday. The Eastern Theater Command of China's People's Liberation Army said on social media Weibo it will practice conducting anti-submarine attacks and sea raids.

After US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island, the military has carried out an unprecedented set of naval and air force drills in areas near Taiwan.

The exercises were scheduled to last four days and end on Sunday, but neither Beijing nor Taipei confirmed their conclusion, though Taiwan's transport ministry said it had seen some evidence suggesting a partial drawdown.

On Monday, the Chinese state news agency Xinhua released a short report that did not mention the end of the drills.

Air force officer Zhang Zhi quoted air force officer Zhang Zhi as saying that the exercises tested tactics of systems warfare under information-based conditions, and improved the capabilities to destroy crucial island targets with precision strikes.
