CVS sets temporary purchase limit for emergency contraceptive pills

A temporary purchase limit on emergency contraceptive pills has been set at three units per week, the company said on Tuesday.

The move came days after the US Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that recognized women's constitutional right to abortion.

Women with unnecessary pregnancies in the country may have the choice of going to another state where the procedure remains legal and available, buying abortion pills online or having a potentially dangerous illegal abortion.

The ruling has had an impact on the demand for over-the counter emergency contraceptive pills, known as Plan B, which are taken within a few days of sexual intercourse.

CVS Health Corp said on Monday it was implementing a temporary purchase limit of three on Plan B and Aftera emergency contraceptive pills, while Walgreens Boots Alliance said it had no purchase limit for Plan B pills at this time.
