D DPRK claims to fire Hwasong 17 intercontinental ballistic missile into its eastern waters

SEOUL TOKYO The Democratic People's Republic of Korea DPRK fired a ballistic missile into its eastern waters, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff JCS. The ballistic missile was launched into the eastern waters from the Sunan area in Pyongyang on Wednesday, according to a statement by the Republic of Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff JCS.

The Japanese government also said that the DPRK fired a ballistic missile toward its eastern waters.

The missile traveled about 470 km at an altitude of around 780 km. The ROK intelligence authorities and the United States were analyzing further details, according to the JCS.

It was the 14th projectile launch by the DPRK this year. On March 24th, the DPRK said it test-fired Hwasongpho 17 a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile.

The DPRK's repeated launches of ballistic missiles were an act of grave threats that would damage the peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and the international community, according to the JCS.

It urged the DPRK to immediately stop such an act that was a violation of the UN Security Council resolutions.

The JCS said that the ROK military was monitoring and tracking relevant situations while keeping a full readiness posture in preparation for possible additional launches.
