European Commission warns Poland that EU law could be threatened

The Chief Executive of the European Commission warned Poland that its challenge to the supremacy of European Union law called into question the very foundations of the 27 nation bloc and could not go unpunished. Poland's Constitutional Tribunal ruled two weeks ago that parts of EU law are incompatible with the Polish Constitution, raising fears that Poland may eventually leave the bloc and undermining the legal pillar on which it stands. Whilst Mr Morawiecki clashed with the EU Commission President in Luxembourg, EU Foreign Ministers in Strasbourg met for a special meeting to prep for this week's Council Summit in Strasbourg. Speaking to reporters, Michael Roth warns that Poland is in the dispute over the rule of law with Germany at last.

In a stern warning to Warsaw, Mr Roth said: We need to talk but I do not see any room for compromises. At the end of such a dialogue, there must be a clear avowal of what we have committed to when we joined the European Union. Finland's Minister for European Affairs also said that compromise could not be the solution and the European Commission must act We don’t want to escort someone out, Tytti Tuppurainen told reporters. But Poland president Andrzej Duda came in defence of Warsaw after meeting his Lithuania counterpart Gitanas Nausea on Tuesday. As he offers to be the mediator between Poland and the European Union, Mr Nausea said rule of law issues should not be tied to EU funding. He said: I think it is morally wrong and not right to link supremacy principles with financial resources. Poland's nationalist Law and Justice Party says it has no plans for a Polexit and - unlike Britain before their Brexit referendum in 2016 - popular support for membership of the EU remains high in Poland. However, other member states have been disappointed with Warsaw's defiance of the EU, including Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki's complaint in a letter on Monday of mission creep that he warned would lead to a capital institution deprived of democratic control Speaking ahead of Morawiecki in a debate on the row in the EU's parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed three options for a response to Polish supremacy of EU law. The European Commission is at present carefully reviewing this decision. I have heard she now says: "I am deeply concerned, she said. The decision of the Commission calls into question the foundations of the European Union.
