Germany looking into Google products under new powers

German cartel office is looking into Google products BERLIN Reuters -- Germany's cartel office said it was looking at Google's use of personal data and its Google News Showcase product under its new powers to regulate internet companies, and was looking into cases involving Amazon, Apple and Facebook owner Meta.

The regulators determined that Alphabet's owner has met the scale threshold required for a company to be subject to new extended supervisory powers to regulate large internet companies that it acquired last year.

Andreas Mundt, office president, said that the Federal Cartel Office can tackle concrete forms of behaviour that harm competition. We are looking more closely at Google's processing of personal data and the topic of the Google News Showcase. He said that the office was considering further cases involving Amazon, Apple and Facebook owner Meta.

The office started looking at Google's use of personal data in May last year and the selection of news under the Google News Showcase in June.
