Greek President calls for investigation into wiretapping of political leader

Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou wants an investigation into the tapping of a political leader's phone by the EYP. The scandal broke out last week amid growing concern in the European Union about the use of spyware and the revelations of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis'personal Watergate.

In a statement, Sakellaropoulou said that the right to privacy is a fundamental condition of a democratic and liberal society and that respect for democracy transcends politics.

She said it needs to get a full explanation of the wiretapping case.

The leader of Greece's socialist PASOK party and a member of the European Parliament, Nikos Androulakis, said on Friday he had learned that EYP was listening to his conversations last year.

EYP s chief executive and Mitsotakis chief of staff were sacked earlier that day.
