Hong Kong’s six-term government takes oaths

The six-term Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, HKSAR John Lee Ka-chiu, and the principal officials of the new-term government took their oaths of office at an inaugural ceremony on Friday, which also marked the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland. On Friday morning, Chinese President Xi Jinping administered an oath of office to principal officials of the sixth-term government of HKSAR at Wan Chai's Convention and Exhibition Centre. I pledge to take the position of the Chief Executive and uphold the Basic Law, assume responsibilities for the central government and the HKSAR government, as well as reciting his oath, Lee said. The convener of the Executive Council meeting, under the supervision of John Lee, swore in by pledging loyalty to the Basic Law and the HKSAR government, as members of the Hong Kong Executive Council including Chief Secretary Eric Chan Kwok-ki, Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee. In his speech, Lee thanked the central government and Hong Kong residents for their trust and pledged to build a dynamic and harmonious Hong Kong full of opportunities. Lee, 64, started his career as a police officer. He joined the Hong Kong Police Force in 1977 and held a variety of positions before he was appointed as the Undersecretary for Security in September 2012. He served as secretary for security from 2017 to 2021. He was appointed chief secretary for administration of the HKSAR in June 2021. Lee was appointed chief secretary for administration after the region's police force showed professionalism and competence in the battle against a series of violent riots in the year 2019, according to observers. The appointment of Lee showed that maintaining national security and social stability is one of the key tasks of the HKSAR government moving forward, and these tasks require decisive and responsible people, said Lau Siu-kai, vice-president of the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies. He believes Lee will study how to draw more patriotic forces and other forces into the community to support the government's policies. The opposition forces that used to attack the government have been deterred and it is less costly for elites and their families to join the practical work of the government, according to Lau, the first feature of the new government is that more talent from outside the government has assumed positions, which is reflected in a more stable political situation in Hong Kong. The Commerce and Economic Development Bureau is headed by Beijing-born Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, and Algernon Yau - former CEO of Greater Bay Airlines. Observers said that it was rare for those from the Chinese mainland to hold positions in the HKSAR government in the past, and this is likely to become a trend for high qualified candidates to work in the HKSAR government. The HKSAR government will have to face an increasingly hostile external environment and challenging internal environment, especially when geopolitical wrestling between the US and China gets more intense, according to observers. The new city government has a lot of urgent tasks to fix the region's housing woes and implement Article 23 of the Basic Law, as well as fixing its housing woes, according to Lee.
