House Jan 6 committee subpoenas ex-Trump White House counsel

The House Select Committee on January 6 sent a subpoena to former Trump White House counsel Pat Cipollone on Wednesday and asked him to testify about three parts of Donald Trump's attempt to overturn the 2020 election results.

The subpoena showed the resolve of the panel in seeking to obtain inside information about how the former president tried to return himself to office from the unique perspective of the White House counsel's office.

The chairman of the committee, Bennie Thompson, said in a statement accompanying the subpoena, that he has repeatedly raised legal and other concerns about President Trump's activities on January 6th and in the days that preceded him.

The committee needs to hear from him on the record, as other former White House counsels have done in other congressional investigations. Concerns about the prerogatives of the office he previously held are clearly outweighed by the need for his testimony. The select committee has said in its hearings that Cipollone was part of a sprawling and potentially unlawful multi--pronged strategy that culminated in the Capitol attack, and was a key witness to some of Trump's most brazen schemes to overturn the 2020 election results.

More details to come.
