Infosys sets up dedicated war room ahead of income tax return deadline

India's second largest IT player Infosys has set up a dedicated war room ahead of the income tax return filing deadline on December 31 and has augmented the technical infrastructure ahead of the tax return filing deadline.

The government expects a lot of rush in during the fortnight, as nearly 3.59 crore income tax returns are filed on the new e-filing portal designed by Infosys. Infosys MD and CEO Salil Parekh assured revenue secretary Tarun Bajaj of the preparedness of the e-filing portal during the peak filing period in a meeting on Thursday to instill confidence among the taxpayers. The Central Board of Direct Taxes CBDT said on Thursday that the number of ITRs filed per day has crossed 6 lakh and it is increasing every day as the extended due date of 31st December, 2021 is approaching.

Of the 3.59 crore ITRs filed for the assessment year 2021 -- 22, 57.6 per cent are ITR 2 29.70 lakh 9.4 per cent are ITR 3 33.61 lakh 23.4 per cent and ITR 7 0.24 lakh Nearly 52 per cent of these ITRs are filed online using the offline software utilities.

CBDT said that more than 2.69 crores of returns were generated by Aadhaar based OTP, which is encouraging to note that 3.11 crore returns have been e-verified.

Individuals with income less than 50 lakh are able to file income-tax return in ITR- 1 Sahaj. Form ITR 4 Sugam is for individuals, Hindu Undivided Families HUFs and firms other than limited liability partnerships with an income of up to 50 lakh and presumptive income from businesses and professions.

Nearly 20 lakh returns were filed in January, the last day for individuals to file returns for FY 20, with about 5.8 crore income-tax returns filing on the last day.

The government extended the deadline for filing income-tax returns for individuals three times last year - first from July 31 to November 30, 2020, then to December 31, 2020, and finally to January 10, 2021.

The income tax department extended the due date for key returns pertaining to assessment year 2021 -- 22 in September, including that for individuals to December 31 from September 30 due to technical issues on the e-filing portal developed by IT major Infosys.
