Japan offers 100, 000 yak voucher to children hit by coronavirus

The Prime Minister and ruling Liberal Democratic Party leader Fumio Kishida speaks at the party headquarters in Tokyo during a news conference.

A combined 100,000 yen worth of vouchers and cash payouts to children between 18 and younger were offered as part of the government's stimulus package, Jiji news agency said on Tuesday.

The Liberal Democratic Party LDP and the coalition partner Komeito agreed to offer 100,000 yen in cash payouts to low-income households that were hit hard by the coronaviruses, Jiji reported in a meeting of executives.

According to Kyodo news agency, Kishida wants to compile the stimulus package on November 19 and an extra budget to fund spending by the end of this month.

The Komeito called for 100,000 yen cash payouts to children aged 18 or younger as part of the package, while LDP officials wanted to set an income cap.

The two parties agreed to offer half the sum in the form of a voucher. The other half will be paid in cash, though the two parties remain unsure on whether to set an annual income limit for those who are eligible, Jiji said.
