Latvian president tests positive for COVID-19, prompting trip to Finland

On Thursday - 14 Oct Reuters : The Latvian President tested positive for COVID-19, his office said, prompting Finland's president Suli Niinisto who had breakfast with him a day earlier to self-isolate.

The infection was found during a routine test in Sweden on Wednesday when Levits visited Sweden for intergovernmental forum, his office said.

Levits would continue to work remotely, but other diary items were cancelled, including a visit by his Latvian counterpart this week and the Latvian president's visit to Kosovo and North Macedonia next week, his office said.

In April, the President was shot with second AstraZeneca vaccination in April, spokeswoman Veronica Davis told BNS news agency.

On Thursday, BNS confirmed 2,408 new novel coronavirus cases and 21 deaths, a record-sized surge, BNS reported. Only 52% of Latvian adults are fully vaccinated, well below the EU average of 75%, EU health figures show.

Latvia has reported 864 new cases per 10,000 population in two weeks to Sunday, second-worst result in EU after neighboring Lithuania.
