The meeting marks the first time that Ms Truss has met Ireland's Foreign Minister since she was promoted to Foreign Secretary in September - and is highly significant given she is now the UK's Brexit negotiator after the resignation of Lord David Frost last month. The Protocol is a major sticking point for both the UK and the EU, with critics in the Unionist community saying it has imposed a border down the Irish Sea by keeping Northern Ireland in the bloc's single market for goods.

Ms Truss is expected to push for an interim agreement aimed at resolving practical problems relating to customs and regulatory checks.

After being handed over Lord Frost's brief, Ms Truss said she wanted to pick up the pace of the negotiations.

Following her installation as Britain s Brexit supremo, Mr Coveney tweeted: Had a positive initial conversation with Liz Truss about working together to support progress in the EU UK talks on Brexit the implementation of the NI Protocol. Ms Truss will meet the European Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic next week in Chevening House, when she will be expected to present constructive proposals to ease the tension.
