Macy's plans to hire fewer holiday workers this year

Macy's plans to hire slightly fewer workers than last year for the upcoming holiday season. The department store chain said more staff members stayed on from last season.

The retailer announced on Monday that it plans to fill 41,000 seasonal positions for its Macy s, Bloomingdale s and Bluemercury stores, supply chain locations and call centers, down from 48,000 last year.

More than 10,300 workers from the 2021 holiday season joined the company full time, which is significantly more than in 2020 when more than 6,100 seasonal colleagues joined the company.

Macy's increased hiring process has allowed the organization to hire fewer colleagues of higher talent levels with more competitive pay who stayed on, resulting in a 40% reduction in turnover. Danielle Kirgan, Macy's chief transformation and human resources officer, said that the focus is on making meaningful investments in our colleagues and that we are proud to provide an unmatched culture and fulfilling career opportunities that put our colleagues and Macy s, Inc. in a strong position for the holiday season.

This year, Macy's is trying to fill positions quickly. The company said it offers a convenient hiring experience with applications taking as little as five minutes. The majority of offers are made within 48 hours, according to Macy's.

If employees stay on after the holiday season, they have the chance to pull in an average base pay above $17 an hour and average total pay of $20 an hour. The Macy's added that they can work additional hours with flexible schedules.

Macy's is one of a handful of companies that have already announced hiring plans for the upcoming season, although Walmart and Michaels have slashed their holiday workforce by a significant margin this year.

Walmart announced last week it plans to hire 40,000 seasonal and full-time workers across the company, down from 150,000 in 2021.

The retailer will give current employees the chance to work extra shifts first before filling them with new hires.

Michaels Chief Operating Officer Joe Venezia told FOX Business that the arts and crafts retailer has deliberately decreased the number of seasonal hires this year to 15,000 in order to increase the number of hours available for seasonal employees.

Target said it would hire up to 100,000 workers, which is in line with its hiring plans last year, but well below 2020 when the department store chain looked to fill around 130,000 positions.
